She has had 26 years experience. She was assistant curate at St. Matthew’s, Islington, and honorary assistant at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Mississauga, interim priest at St. James, Humber Bay, and incumbent for nine years in the parish of Tecumseth, Trinity, St. John’s. Then she was associate priest with Philip Poole for six years at Trinity, Aurora, before her most recent position as incumbent at St. Patrick’s, Willowdale, which has a profile similar to ours. In addition she has a long record of volunteering in the community and working on inter-church committees. Fran has four adult children. Iris and Pam are the eldest and very close in age, being twins. Hillary and Bruce are the other two. ![]() On
January 30, the congregation of St. Matthias celebrated the ministry of
the Reverend Reginald Stackhouse with the presentation of
a memento and a short speech by the rector’s warden, Gib Goodfellow,
followed by a light luncheon. The congregation was most thankful
that Reg was able to sustain our membership over such a long period
with his charm, wit, and deep spirituality.
In his 60 years in the
Anglican priesthood, Reg has been a rector, a professor, a
principal of Wycliffe College for eleven years (He did not tell me how
long he has been in active service as principal emeritus and research
professor), and he was twice elected as Member of Parliament.
For most mortals that would
have been a satisfying career but Reg has authored ten books, written
over 400 articles, columns and reviews, served as school trustee,
library trustee, human rights commissioner, and corporate director,
Canadian representative to the U.N. General Assembly.
He holds six earned degrees and three honorary degrees. But I believe the titles he
has valued most are husband, father and grandfather.
His beloved wife,
Margaret and he will celebrate 60 years of happy marriage next
June. They have four children and nine grandchildren.
Of 300 nominated for the Order
of Ontario this year, he was one of 30 selected. The citation for
his presentation referred to his social advocacy and
his service for education, penal reform, human rights, and world
peace.
I also mentioned his being the
first priest to address the United Nations General Assembly and his
being the first chair of the founding board of Ontario's first
community college.
